Father’s Day

“Though my father and mother forsake me,
the Lord will rescue me.
Teach me your way, O’Lord;
lead me in a straight path
because of my oppressors.”

-Psalm 27.

Our human parents, as well as those in authority over us, can fail us but God is one person who will not. When for whatever reason you experience the wilderness – abscense of hope, conflict, terror or torment – turn to God. Consider yourself blessed. The greatest sermon ever written, The Sermon on The Mount, by the greatest Teacher, Jesus Christ, who walked this earth,was written and spoken for YOU. Ask for and receive the ‘eyes of faith’ . Our Father will receive you.

“Yet to all who received him, to those who believed in his name,he gave the right to become children of God-children born not of natural descent,nor of human decision or a husband’s will, but born of God.”

-John 1:12-13

Notice there is no favoritism here. No preferential treatment. This God, “Our Father” describes no one as an infidel. Else where in the Bible God is described as ‘no respector of persons’. This means that God cares about YOU. You could be the ‘least of these‘ – no obvious talent (yet!), no head turning looks (yet!) and perhaps even one of the most despised and afflicted persons but our father ‘sees‘ YOU’. He sees you as He made you in His image. He sees the divine in you and not the profane. A human Father is susceptible to sin and temptation, Our Heavenly Father is not. He is motivated by love not lust.

“Because those who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God. For you did not receive a spirit that makes you a slave again to fear, but you received the Spirit of sonship. And by him we cry, “Abba, Father.” The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children.”

-Romans 8:14-16

I loved my human father deeply but he was human. The saddest thing in the world is not our losses but our lack of gain. As it says elsewhere in the Bible, “What profits a man if he were to gain the whole world and lose his soul?” People are funny. We think we can corner the market somehow on God. When I am not in tears over this bent and crooked world, I find the human family amazing….. And I like to look up at the sky and the moon and stars and pray to a God who is Above and Beyond, Alpha and Omega whose love is poured out as grace.

“Call to me and I will answer you and tell you great and unsearchable things you do not know.”

-Jeremiah 33:3
