I have often felt like a lone voice when I spoke of conditions in Malaysia. I wondered why the international community and even American academia was silent on the subject. I can well appreciate a government being reluctant to intervene in the internal affairs of a nation but what surprises me is to encounter this resistance in academia.
In his article, “While Malaysia fiddles, its opportunities are running dry“, Michael Backman, writing for The Age in Australia describes the Malaysian dilemma accurately. It is a crying shame. And yet, even Mr. Backman feels the need to write a note to reassure or appease Malaysian sensibilities.
For me, what Mr.Backman has to say, is a relief to hear. We can always work with the truth, however devastating to the self, and move forward. It is the lies that consume and destroy us.
